Introduction
In this post, we will be discussing the differences between MSS and LC (liquid culture). We will also be discussing why you should choose one over the other based on your desired outcome.
What is MSS?
MSS stands for multi-spore syringe. A multi-spore syringe will usually come in a 10-cc syringe paired with a needle. The syringe will contain a large quantity of spores suspended in sterile water. You can browse a large selection of liquid culture at Inoculate The World.
What is MSS used for?
Multi-Spore Syringes are usually used with Agar but could also be used to Inoculate an all in one grow bag or a grain bag although spore syringes are not always 100% clean meaning they can lead to contamination. Spore Syringes are generally cheap, affordable and easy to find.
This is why people opt to use AGAR with their spore syringes. By applying just a small drop to an agar dish you are able to germinate multiple spores. Doing so will allow you to choose the most vigorous and healthy mycelium to be transferred to your preferred growing method be it sterile grain, an
All-In-One bag or sterile liquid culture.
What about LC?
LC stands for liquid culture. This is healthy mycelium suspended in a nutritious blend. For the most part, people will make LC by working on a specific genetic trait until it produces the desired effect. It is very common for people to isolate genetics based on yield, size of fruits, and potency; however, it's not uncommon for someone to isolate what is called a "mutant," such as Enigma. We love using True Blue Genetics for our liquid cultures, and when in stock, you can request a free Enigma syringe with your donation!
What is LC used for?
Liquid culture can be used in the same ways as MSS. LC is generally a lot cleaner than spores, so it can also be used with our Expand-It! Liquid Culture Jars easily turn your 10-cc syringe into 400 ml!
What should I choose?
This depends on what you are wanting to accomplish. Using multi-spore syringes gives you the freedom to pheno-hunt, meaning you can try to isolate your own genetics based on your own preferences. On the flip side, using a liquid culture is essentially using a clone of someone else's proven genetics. LC is more often than not faster than spores since you do not wait for the spores to germinate before they start to produce mycelium.
